This folder, consisting primarily of newsy fundraising letters from late 1964-1966, shows some of the stresses, strains, and accomplishments of the civil rights movement after Freedom Summer. A September 15, 1964 letter to summer volunteers who had returned home asks them for financial support and reminds them that "we didn't work miracles last summer; we only got a toehold." There's a copy of the Benton County newsletter. The Holly Springs Freedom School Theater Guild went to New York to perform and raise money. There's a flyer about the Freedom Vote of November 1964, and a pamphlet explaining the Congressional Challenge. A December 1964 letter denies that COFO is breaking up, but discusses the NAACP's withdrawal and SNCC's and CORE's bad financial problems. One former volunteer is discouraged by her distance from Mississippi and about the tensions between the civil rights and peace movements.
