Encyclopedia article about Clark Atlanta University (CAU), located southwest of downtown Atlanta, which is a private, urban, coeducational institution of higher education. Fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the university offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree and nondegree programs to students of diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. CAU is one of only two private, historically black universities in the United States that award the doctorate in more than five disciplines. CAU was formed by the consolidation of the Atlanta University and Clark College in 1988 and is part of the Atlanta University Center.The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
