Description

Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.John M. Sterling writes to William Lloyd Garrison discussing a lecture he delivered to the Congregational Society on "the subject which is so dear to our hearts & am happy to inform you that the results are most blessed." He comments on the decline of the American Colonization Society, which confirms for him what he has "often remarked - that too much of our time & strength are wasted in our Cities & that the country is too much neglected." Sterling argues that people in the country are less prejudiced than in cities where "opinions are there formed without examination." He tells Garrison he plans to lecture in New York on his way back to Cleveland, Ohio and asks him to send the Liberator to a number of people. Before ending the letter, Sterling offers Garrison "a friendly suggestion ... beware of prosperity."
