Encyclopedia article about the Tubman African American Museum in Macon, the largest of its kind in the Southeast. Founded in 1981, it has grown from a local attraction into a major collection of African American art, artifacts, and documents for national visitors. The mission of the Tubman Museum is to educate people about African American art, history, and culture. Historically significant achievements of African American inventors, military leaders, artisans, musicians, writers, artists, and heroes are featured in prominent galleries throughout the museum.The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
