Description
Photograph of the rear of the Assau Baines Company plant at numbers 1715-1717 Thames Street and Commercial Wharf in Fell's Point, Baltimore, Maryland. Specializing in the canning of fruits and vegetables, the company was located on Granby Street until about 1900, when it moved to Thames Street. In 1901, it became the W. F. Assau Canning Company, moving by 1913 to new facilities at Boston and Streeper Streets. In this picture taken at the Thames Street address, a handful of men including several African Americans are standing in the rear of the plant, watching as a Lafrance Metropolitan Steam Engine equipped with a three-horse hitch is being serviced. This piece of equipment probably belongs to the Baltimore City Fire Department firehouse nearest this wharf, Engine Co. No. 34 located at South Caroline and Gough Streets.
