Description

This video recording consists of three separate programs from the community television station of Long Beach, California. In the first program, dated April 18, 1989, Dr. Asa G. Hilliard, III addresses an audience at California State University –Dominguez Hills. In the presentation, titled “Is the Black Male an Endangered Species,” Dr. Hilliard discusses the challenges faced by African American males in the United States. He argues that the problems arise from economic injustice, the prevalence of drugs, and the poor quality of education in African American communities. Hilliard asserts that special education programs are used to label large numbers of African American males as “mentally retarded.” The second, undated program (time mark 01:29:19) is titled “Afro-centricity presents Nile Valley Civilizations.” The program, hosted by J. Montgomery Pratt, consists of a slideshow presentation by architect Mathu Ater on ancient Egyptian influence on European architecture. The third program (time mark 01:57:39), also undated, is titled “World Afrikan News.” In the program, the host Kwesi Osafo interviews Dr. Alosi Moloi of the Pan-Afrikanist Congress (P.A.C.) of Azania (South Africa).
