Description
Boxing poster advertising the World's Heavyweight Championship boxing re-match between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling, June 22, 1938 at Yankee Stadium. This poster consists of three different parts. The 1936 bout was won by Schmeling but in this match Joe Louis knocked out Max Schmeling in the first round. Joe Louis, known as the "Brown Bomber," was considered one of the greatest heavyweight fighters of all time. He is often regarded as the first African American to become a nationwide hero, and he became the focal point of anti-Nazi sentiment with the Schmeling fight of 1936. He was the reigning World Heavyweight Champion from 1937 until his retirement in 1949.Currently not on view
