Description

In this series of WSB-TV newsfilm clips from Athens, Georgia, in 1972, candidates for the U.S. Senate race offer their opinions on rival candidate David Gambrell, and outline their own positions, in an interview and at a press conference. The clips begin with an airplane shown landing on a tarmac. In the following clip, a building with the words "Athens Georgia" is shown. U.S. Senate candidate Gerry Dokka is then interviewed, apparently in front of the airplane that landed earlier, stating to an unidentified reporter that his own candidacy has not "generated the enthusiasm" he would like, that he does not consider himself a "serious threat to [David] Gambrell," and that he would support any candidate he believes can defeat Gambrell, whom he considers to represent "dollars that will rape the environment," "that just don't give a damn about poor people, or old people, or young people." The next clip shows Dokka and Hosea Williams participating in a press conference outdoors in front of the same building shown earlier. At this press conference, Williams states to a group of unidentified reporters that he is "for a coalition for the people, against the power structure, to put politics back into the hands of the people." He also states, "I couldn't seriously discuss the coalition until after the first ballot is counted. I'm a serious candidate, and I've got a good chance of being number one." Three unidentified white males also appear to be participants in this press conference, but do not...
