Records collected by the Mississippi Sovereignty Commission on race relations in Alaska. The file contains one newspaper article from the New Orleans Times-Picayune about the appointment of Mrs. Blanche McSmith of Anchorage to the second legislative session of the new state. McSmith was appointed to complete the term of someone who had been appointed to another governmental position. She was the first African American to serve in that state's legislature.The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
