Description

Located at: Highways 29 and 57, Irwinton, Ga.Built by Patrick Ward in 1856, the antebellum church of handmade brick, chartered by the state legislature in 1854 and used jointly by the Presbyterians, Methodists, and Baptists, has a slave gallery inside. A Greek Revival portico shading the entrance features three two-story Doric columns, which may represent the three denominations, the Trinity, or which may have been used because the spacing seemed proper for the two separate entrance doors. The spire is topped by a weather vane rather than a cross, in keeping with the Protestant avoidance of Catholic imagery. For more information see Linley, John. Architecture of Middle Georgia: the Oconee Area. Athens, Ga.: University of Georgia Press, c1972, pp. 8, 166.Date of structure: 1856.
