Description

Sign in photo reads: Gut heil. From attached email: The 5 attachments are pictures of the Turnverein Vorwaerts Turner Halle in Chicago, Il. The picture in attachment no. 4 was taken prior to 1939 as the "Vorwaerts" name is on the window of the restaurant. In 1939 the name was changed to "Forward Turners". All the other pictures were taken in 2006. Several years ago I wrote and published a book titled "History of the Turnverein Vorwaerts of Chicago, Illinois". A copy of this book is filed with the Chicago Historical Society and another copy is at UIUPI in Indianapolis. At that time, I didn't have any decent pictures of the Turner Hall but the building was described in detail in the book. The building was built in 1896 and is still standing today. It is the only structure that still exists on the south side of the 2400 bolck of Roosevelt Road (12th Street). The Forward Turners sold the building to the Mexican Patriotic Society in 1945 and I understand that the building is no an African American Church of some kind (2006). The pictures clearly show the stone images of "Father Jahn", the Turner "FFFF" logo, other Turner emblems with the "Owl", etc., the "Vorwaerts Turner Halle" engraving and other symbols.
