View of the Mound City National Cemetery in Mound City, Illinois. During the American Civil War, Mound City was the site of a naval hospital. The cemetery was used to inter both Union and Confederate soldiers who died while under care there. (Mound City lies in extreme southern Illinois across the Ohio River from Kentucky, a border state sympathetic to the southern confederacy during the Civil War. Many battles were fought in the area)
