Thomas was especially influenced by displays of azaleas she saw in Washington, D.C. Acrylic on canvas.A prominent abstract painter of the 1960s and 1970s, Alma Thomas was the first African American woman to have a solo art exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, in 1971. Thomas did not concentrate exclusively on making art until she was well into her sixties.
