He later served as co-pastor of the church with his son, Martin Luther King, Jr., and finally left his leadership role at ebenezzer in 1975. Martin Luther King, Sr. was a leader in the civil rights movement and became head of the Atlanta chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and led the Civic and Political League.
