Description

Orderly book containing general and regimental orders of the 6th Virginia Regiment, covering the time from Mar. 18 to Aug. 28, 1776. Scattered records and notes made by the owner of the two plantations in Amelia County - Flatt Creek and Grove Brook. The records that immediately follow the text of the orderly book cover the period from 1783 to 1811, and include accounts, inventories, notes on the contracts with overseers, recipes, home remedies, and records of "Experiments in Planting". The records also mention Negro slaves. The notes and the last portion of the orderly book covering the two weeks from Aug. 14 to Aug. 28 are written in the hand of Capt. William Murray (1752-1815?) Also included is a letter dated Apr. 28, 1860 and signed John H. Alexander, evidently to Thomas H. Wynne or John West about the identity of the owner of the Flat Creek and Grove Brook plantations. The orderly book was published, after a transcript made for Thomas H. Wynne, in: The orderly book of that portion of the American army stationed at or near Williamsburg, Va., under the command of General Andrew Lewis, from March 18th, 1776, to August 28th, 1776. / Printed from the original manuscript, with notes and introduction by Charles Campbell, esq. ...
