Description
Photograph of a float, most likely carrying bells of the McShane Bell Foundry, in a parade on Baltimore Street just east of Charles Street in Baltimore, Maryland. Four pairs of horses are pulling a float on which one large bell and several smaller bells are displayed. Two men in uniform are riding in the driver's seat, while one or two others are riding or standing on the float behind the large bell. Traffic has stopped as spectators, including many African Americans, on both sides of the street and in streetcars and wagons are watching the float pass. Just behind the float is streetcar number 1609 moving west as the float moves west; farther down the street on the right is the Harford Road streetcar traveling east. Although a bell used at the front of every parade to announce its coming was a common practice in Baltimore, the occasion for this parade is unknown. (Photograph provided courtesy of W. Bryant Tyrrell.)
