Wilbour, Owen

Description

Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Owen Wilbour writes to William Lloyd Garrison describing himself as an "eye witness to the horrors and cruelties of domestic slavery". He says that he has "stood as a target for sporstmen to shoot at for more than 25 years" due to his abolitionist views, and has been called "crazy", "possessed of devils", "a sabbath breaker, a despiser of the ministers of the gospel, an infidel of the blackest stamp striving to root out the christian religion" and more. Wilbour then shares his views of religion as it relates to slavery and sends Garrison a letter he wrote to a neighbor (not included), telling Garrison "if you think there is light or truth in it that would help the antislavery cause along use it as you think proper."
