Pictured are Allan Randall Freelon (1895-1960) (2nd from left), Samuel Joseph Brown (2nd from right), John T. Harris (1st from right), and an unidentified woman (1st from left) posed with a painting dedicated to a school district. Freelon earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art. In 1921 as the Assistant Director of Art Education, he became the first African American to be appointed to the Department of the Superintendent in Philadelphia Schools. He studied contemporary art for three years at the Barnes Foundation and during a stint at the Philadelphia Sketch Club he studied painting under Hugh Breckenridge. In addition to his trade, Freelon took an interest in landscape painting and printmaking. His works are featured in a number of private collections, and in the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Woodmere Museum.
