This issue of Mosaic features South Boston High School student interviews, poetry, artwork, and photography, and is arranged in two parts: interviews and articles comprise the first section, followed by a second volume of The Word Should be Heard, which features student poetry. In Part 1, Celtics ball boy Brett Harris is interviewed by Ernest Brun and talks about his responsibilities, his relationship with the team, and shares the perspectives of Celtic players on being a professional basketball player. Kathy Griffin, Ana Martinez, Andrew Baker, Sonia Summers, and Tracie Weaver each interview a South Boston High School student about his or her job (respectively, a paperboy, a porter at a nursing home, an assistant manager at a supermarket, an employee at CVS, and an employee at Chateau Garod). Each student talks about how she or he acquired he position, the unique challenges of the position, and what a typical day looks like for them. Baker interviews South Boston High School student Greg Rowell about growing up on a farm in South Carolina, his family life, farm schedules and operations, southern customs, his move to Boston, and racism in the South as compared to racism in the North. Griffin writes an autobiographical account of learning English as a second language, having grown up with sign language as her first language, and tells the story of the education of her deaf mother.
