Stanton writes William Lloyd Garrison thanking him for his "very kind note" and the cartes de visite of Helen Garrison, whom Stanton requests Garrison relay his respects. Stanton asserts that Garrison's invitation to witness the "ceremonies at Fort Sumter" was a fitting tribute to his labors, and that his absence would have diminished the "significance" of the event
