From 1971 to 1975, he chaired a court-appointed bi-racial Advisory Committee to the Atlanta Board of Education that helped end years of litigation and fighting over the desegregation of the Atlanta public school system. From 1971 to 1986, Wade served on the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA).
