Mr. Freeman M. Moore was part of the class of 1950 of Springfield College. Originally from Sommerville, New Jersey, Mr. Moore graduated with a Major in Health Education and a Minor in General Science. Mr. Moore was part of the college’s football and lacrosse team, he also was a member of the Alpha Phi Omega and the Varsity Clubs, and he was a secretary of the Student Council. After graduation he went on to get a masters degree at Columbia University, and was educator and football coach in Brooklyn and later in Detroit. In Michigan he was involved in an influential state supreme court case in Michigan, known as the Beech Grove Investment Company vs. the Civil Rights Commission of the State of Michigan, that brought fair housing to the state. Jackie Robinson was the first African American to play in the major leagues of Baseball was an All-Star for six consecutive seasons from 1949 through 1954, and won the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 1949—the first black player so honored. Mr. Robinson played in six World Series and contributed to the Dodgers' 1955 World Series championship. In 1997, MLB "universally" retired his uniform number, 42, across all major league teams; he was the first pro athlete in any sport to be so honored. Mr. Robinson also contributed significantly to the Civil Rights Movement and his uses of nonviolence, and his unquestionable talent challenged the traditional basis of segregation which then marked many other aspects of American life.Only...
