In 1973, he became the first African American appointed to the University System of Georgia Board of Regents. In 1977, he became president of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, making him the first African American to head a major metropolitan chamber of commerce in the United States. Hill also founded the African American newspaper, The Atlanta Inquirer.
