Description
This letter was written to Mary Johnson of Worthington, Ohio from an old classmate at the Female Seminary School, S. M. Tucker, of Parkersburg, Virginia. Tucker describes her trip from Columbus to Parkersburg via stage and steamboat. She goes into detail about the scenery. She talks about teaching at seminary and suggests Johnson come for summer term. She assures Johnson that the cost will be much the same as in Worthington and the other girls are interesting enough. Throughout the letter, she remarks on the African-American slaves in her new home. Tucker also mentions a few of their mutual friends such as Caroline Griswold. Mary was daughter of one of Worthington's founders, Orange Johnson and wife Achsa (Maynard) Johnson. She married Francis Sessions on August 18, 1847. The Sessions were interested in promoting art and art instruction in Columbus. Nothing is known of S. M. Tucker other than that she was a student at the Female Seminary. This appears to be the only letter written between the two women.
