Description

This series of WSB-TV newsfilm clips highlights several speakers from the opening day of the "Conference To Build Better Neighborhoods To Improve Urban Environment" held at the Dinkler Plaza Hotel. The first few clips are very shaky and brief showing Cecil A. Alexander (Atlanta Housing Resources Committee) at the podium, flanked by Dr. Samuel Williams (Friendship Baptist Church) and Eva C. Galambos (Community Planning Council of Sandy Springs), with a close-up of Atlanta architect Andrew E. Steiner. There are three brief shots of people in the audience. The next clip is of Dr. Williams speaking about the issues he heard from the other speakers. He focuses on the absence of discussion about the type of community change should produce, noting that while color differences were addressed, issues surrounding poverty were not. He specifically notes that the poor might not be in Sandy Springs. He says, "we've taken it for granted that some folk got to remain poor." The next clip is of Eva Galambos refutation of Dr. Williams' remarks. The final clip is of Cecil Alexander commenting on getting an economic mix of people in the area, including Sandy Springs.Sandy Springs during this period was an unincorporated area.Title supplied by cataloger.Supporting information was taken from the following source: Sinclair, Molly.
