Judge Juanita Kidd Stout (1919-1998) taking oath for Municipal Court Judge. Stout became the first African American woman elected to a court of record in the United States in 1959, and three decades later in 1988 she became the first African American woman to serve as a judge on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. In 2012, Philadelphia City Council paid tribute to the jurist by renaming the Criminal Justice Center in her honor. Today the courthouse at 13th and Filberts Streets is known as the Justice Juanita Kidd Stout Center for Criminal Justice. October 23, 1959
