Methodist Episcopal minister, David E. Blaine, writes to his family to describe life in Portland, Oregon Territory. He mentions that is about to attend a camp meeting in Oregon City and will leave his wife, Catherine, with a sewing girl and a student who work nights and mornings for her board while attending school. David then notes the spread of dysentery and how it has caused the death of many children. He writes that he briefly thought his own five-month old son had become ill. David also notes that he had to preach the funeral sermon for two of the dead children. He mentions the recent marriages of his fellow Methodists and writes that there are seven families still in Seattle. He notes that two ships are still there protecting Seattle as the Yakima War continues. He then describes an incident in which a resident of Puget Sound, Mr. Collins, and two other whites shot at three friendly Native Americans who were in Collins' acquaintance.
