Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Manuscript addressed from "Brown University", where Milford was one of the first African-American students to graduate in 1877.George Washington Milford thanks William Lloyd Garrison for his letter and gift, and informs him that he has the promise of sufficient monetary funds to see him through the current academic year. Milford recounts the intense personal pride and satisfaction that he finds in his academic studies, and the joy he derives in "the consciousness of having overcome difficulties". Milford acknowledges that the progress of African-Americans is "slow but sure", and concedes that "much still remains to be done".
