Gaither, George R Lee, William

Description

Bill of sale dated December 21, 1844 from William Lee of Frederick County, Maryland to George R. Gaither of Baltimore County, Maryland (and later of Howard County, Maryland) for his Negro slave named Robert. The sale is in the amount of $500. Witnessed by O. Horsey and Justice of the Peace Benedict Boone of Frederick County on December 21, 1844, with Boone certified as a justice of the peace by Frederick County clerk Hy. (Henry) Schley on December 26, 1844, and then recorded by Baltimore County clerk Thos. (Thomas) Kell (number 69 folio 422) on December 28, 1844, and finally recorded by Howard County clerk W. H. Worthington on January 11, 1855, the document identifies Robert as being about 28 years of age and stipulates that for years of excellent service Robert will be offered his freedom after he has provided faithful service to George R. Gaither from December 1, 1844 to December 1, 1854. (Editor's note: Though not mentioned in the document, George R. Gaither appears to have been living in Baltimore County in 1844 but by 1855 to have moved to Howard County, where the document is finally recorded. Blank page 3 was not scanned and thus is not included.)
