Description

Letter of protest sent to President Dammann following decision to admit African American student "Dear 'Reverend' Mother, There is a rumor going about Saint Louis which is distressing us all very much. I just heard it this evening and am writing immediately to have it contradicted by yourself. Beacuse it simply cannot be true. It is that there is to be a negro freshman next year. I am practically beside myself at the very thought that such a thing might be, but I am not going to go around contradicting rumors until I have word from headquarters. Would you be kind enough to have someone drop me a line about this immediately, because if this gets around it will kill the reputation of Manhattanville in Saint Louis and absolutely cut off any enrollment of student from here. We are all well and I send my most respectful, deep love -"
