Nathaniel Adams Coles, known professionally as Nat "King" Cole (1919-1965) vocalist, jazz pianist and first African American entertainer to host a variety TV series in 1956. Though not particularly known for his activism during the movement for Black civil rights, Cole made significant monetry contributions to civil rights causes such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and he filed lawsuits against northern hotels that refused him service.
