Description

In the statement Sullivan specifically refers to an upcoming Sunday gathering of African Americans at the Capitol "under the guise of a religious service." He argues that citizens have other facilities for such purposes, and he suggests that the meeting would only "further incite the tense situation that exists in Montgomery." He announces that the local police will disperse the crowd because "we have no intention whatsoever of permitting our city to be used as a site for the racial agitators and prejudiced northern press to further their program of racial strife and exploitation for financial gain and spectacular distorted news coverage."
