Description

Bill of sale dated March 20, 1849 for a female Negro slave named Hamite sold by Erasmus Perry of Montgomery County to Hester Ann Putney of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The sale is in the amount of $150. Witnessed by Justice of the Peace Nathan Shipley on March 20 and recorded by district clerk E. P. (Edwin Parsons) Hayden on March 21, the document identifies Hamite as a Negro girl who was age about 14 years on February 1, 1846 and is to serve until she reaches age 30 years, i.e., until February 1, 1862, when she is to be set free. Hamite is the same slave sold by Thomas S. Herbert on April 14, 1846 (recorded in liber J. L. M. number 1 folio 396) and then later sold to Erasmus Perry on January 3, 1849 (recorded in number 2 folio 135). To view a document of one of the previous sales of Hamite, see item hcbh003, "Bill of sale from Isaac C. Anderson to Erasmus Perry". (Editor's note: During this time period, Howard County was known as the Howard District of Anne Arundel County. Howard County was officially designated a county in 1851.)
