Photograph of Henry Taylor, free African American. Henry Taylor (1823-1892) was a free African American man born in Fayetteville, NC. He moved to Wilmington, NC in 1850, where he worked as a carpenter. Family tradition says he worked on the Bellamy Mansion Museum and other antebellum buildings. He operated a grocery story on Nutt Street while continuing his carpentry. He was active in many of the civic and religious affairs of the city, a member of Giblem Masonic Lodge ,and a founding member of the local Republican Party. He married Emily Still, and they had four children. He is buried in Pine Forest Cemetery.
