Description

[Handwritten on verso] Owned by Samuel Johnston, a noted patriot of the Revolutionary period, who was the first U.S. senator from N.C. and also a governor of the state. It was at his death possessed by his son James Cathcart Johnston who in 1861 was the largest slave holder in the U.S., having more than 4000 slaves. The house has been continuously occupied and is very handsomely furnished.
