James Vlasto Leonela Medina Baez

Description

Vlasto discusses Badillo’s role as one of the observers requested by the prisoners during the Attica Prison Riot in 1971. The small team of observers became the defacto negotiating team between the state and prisoners and were trying to bring about a peaceful end to the stand off and get the state to agree to the improved conditions and better treatment the prisoners demanded. Vlasto emphasizes that even though this intervention positively impacted Badillo’s political image he did not receive much press coverage because other well-known personalities were involved as well. While Badillo was involved with the negotiations, he and Vlasto were in communication, and Vlasto discusses how he had first hand information about what was going on that did not get covered in the press.
