Born Detroit, MichiganIn 1984, at thirty-three Ben Carson was appointed director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University, becoming the youngest physician in the nation to occupy such a position. Born in poverty, he was reared by a single mother who provided constant encouragement and instilled in him the desire to become a doctor. He also drew inspiration from his deep-seated religious faith. After graduating from Yale University and earning a medical degree from the University of Michigan, Carson became the first African American neurosurgical resident at Johns Hopkins University. He honed his surgical skills during a hospital residency in Australia before accepting a permanent post at Johns Hopkins, where he earned international renown for scores of complex surgeries, including the separation of conjoined twins. Carson retired from surgical practice in 2013.
