William LaBounty was born June 29, 1920 in Superior, Wisconsin. In this interview, LaBounty recounts his childhood, family and work prior to World War II. Recalls his draft notification, physical examination and basic training including night marches. Remembers being shipped from Arkansas to Los Angeles and entering the war at Iwo Jima. Recalls going on patrol with his unit and serving as the radioman. Explains the process of clearing caves on the island, and use of flamethrowers and grenades. Narrates camp life including insects, weather and what it was like to serve with African American servicemen in his unit. Recalls his highest promotion to buck sergeant, and frequently being demoted/losing stripes for various infractions. Remembers receiving the Silver Star and Bronze Star.
