WSB-TV (Television station : Atlanta, Ga.)

Description

In this 1958 WSB-TV newsfilm clip from Atlanta, Georgia, Ivan Allen, Jr. speaks about a proposed private school plan in response to new federal laws banning segregation in the public school system. He sits at a table with an unidentified interviewer. First, Allen states that he supports a plan to establish all-white private schools as an alternative to desegregated public schools. He states that those who support segregated schools are "willing to try any reasonable plan" to further their efforts. He then discusses how the private school plan is essentially a "public school plan under a different legal basis." He finally asserts that, should United States Supreme Court rule this plan unconstitutional, the government of Georgia must work to keep the public schools open and segregated.
