Carruthers, Jacob

Description

This video recording, dated October 7, 1998, consists of a presentation by Dr. Jacob Carruthers, a professor of History and Education at the Center for Inner City Studies at North Eastern Illinois University. The presentation was delivered at the headquarters of the United African Movement (UAM) in New York, New York. Dr. Carruthers argues that European conceptions of history have always erased the historical reality of African people. He contends that Africans must restore their history and their historical world view, which has been “distorted” by the European drive to create a dominating “universal” history. Dr. Carruthers illustrates his talk by referring to an Ancient Egyptian tale of the battle between Truth and Falsehood, declaring that the European view of history is false. He closes his presentation by warning the audience not to “snatch defeat from the jaws of victory” by compromising with “the enemy.” The first section of this video also contains introductory remarks by lawyer Alton Henry Maddox, Jr., who denounces Jesse Jackson and others who have come to the defense of President Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky controversy.
