US Navy (USN) Rear Admiral (lower half) (RDML) Ann E. Rondeau, Commander, Navy Region Midwest/Commander, Naval Service Training Command, salutes the National ENSIGN after presenting it to Sala Marilyn Steinbach, daughter of William Sylvester White, one of the Navys first 13 African-American officers. Dubbed "The Golden 13", he was one of the Navys first 13 African-American officers. Mr. White, 79, served in the Navy from 1943-1946, earning the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTJG). A 1937 graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, White served as an Illinois Appellate Court Judge in the last years of his career. He returned to Great Lakes several times including for the dedication of the Golden 13 Recruit In-processing Center, June 5, 1987, and for the 50th anniversary celebration of the Golden 13s commissioning in 1994.
