Worthington Schools

Description

The 1970 edition of the Worthington High School “Cardinal” yearbook features photos of students, faculty, activities, sports, social events and candid snapshots. Earl W. Lane was principal and Harold C. McCord was superintendent of Worthington schools. The senior class has their individual portraits included, while grades nine through eleven are featured in small group photos. Page 37 of the book notes that the increased population of the school to over 2000 students meant that the ninth grade was housed in what is now the Kilbourne Middle School. Many new programs were initiated including an independent study program and study hall options. The school's race relations club was formed this year to explore and respond to issues of racial inequality. The school abolished its dress code in this year; boys sported longer sideburns, while girls now had pants as an option to wear to school. The school also celebrated the first-ever Earth Day on April 22, 1970, by canceling regular classes so that students could participate in group discussions on fighting pollution. The actor J.K.Simmons, winner of an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor among other accolades, attended Worthington High School from 1970 to 1972. His freshman class photo is featured (page 64), and he also appears in photos of the freshman mixed chorus (page 121) and the freshman football team (page 162).
