Abbot was launched on April 13, 1944 at the Permanente Metals Corporation Shipyard No. 2 at Richmond, Calif.; the ship, honoring the founder The Chicago Defender, was the third name for a noted Negro editor and publisher; Mrs. John H. Sengstacke, sponsor of the vessel, christens the Robert S. Abbot.
