Description

The opening document--"The Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party"--discusses the origins of this party, its members' exclusion from the all-white Democratic Party of Mississippi, its challenge to the 1964 Democratic National Convention, and its use of an alternative election --the Freedom Vote--when Mississippi African Americans were effectively barred from participating in state and national elections. It includes the familiar "How Negroes Fared [when they tried to participate in June 1964 county and precinct meetings of the state Democratic Party]," Mississippi voter registration statistics by race, and quotations from the state Democratic Party--including its opposition to having a two-party system--as appendices.
