Description

This roughly one-hour long recording may have been made by Carl or Anne Braden in February 1963. No interviewer is heard as Bob Moses describes his arrival in Mississippi in 1960, his initial voter registration efforts around McComb in 1961, and renewed attempts in 1962. He recounts his meetings with Amzie Moore, E.W. Steptoe, Brenda Travis, and others, the school boycott in McComb, and the hazards faced by the first SNCC workers in the area such as Hollis Watkins and Curtis Hayes. Moses discusses his first arrests and jail time, the murder of Herbert Lee, identifying Lee's body, and SNCC organizing work in Mississippi during 1961-1962. The transcript below was generated by voice recognition software and has not been meticulously proofread. Before quoting from this interview, verify passages by comparing them against the audio recording.
