Description

Encyclopedia article about Ulrich Bonnell Phillips. Phillips was the first major historian of the South and of southern slavery, and his work has attracted as much attention and generated as much controversy as that of any southern historian. Phillips was born in LaGrange on November 4, 1877, to Jessie Young and Alonzo Rabun Phillips. His father, a merchant, was of yeoman stock, but his mother, whom Phillips considered his foremost inspiration, had a plantation background.
