Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.On verso, the letter is addressed to "William Lloyd Garrison, Boston, Mass." and it is postmarked with a red, circular stamp reading, "Portland Me. Sep 6." A red seal is also present along the spine edge.Along the head edge of the first page, Henry Egbert Benson added a note reading, "What language for a signer of the Declaration [of Sentiments of the American Anti-Slavery Society]" and signed with his initials, "HEB."James Frederick Otis writes to William Lloyd Garrison asking for his bill for the Liberator and discontinuing his subscription. Otis criticizes the Liberator as "calculated to produce the terrible excitement now raging through the land" and states that he "cannot consent to continue to be the recipient of a journal that alludes to a relative & dear friend [Harrison Gray Otis] as to a desecrator of the cradle of liberty." He tells Garrison he "cannot longer consent to be identified with a society or a press that promulgates" views supporting abolition.
