West thanks Gillespie for a positive editorial: "Editorials such as yours from respected publications give politicians like myself the strength and courage to continue to work for better race relations."" West had taken a fair amount of criticism for his attempts to help address the concerns of students at South Carolina State College in the wake of the Orangeburg Massacre.
