Disney, Richard

Description

Deed of manumission dated November 9, 1858 by Richard Disney of Baltimore County for his Negro slave named Susan Jackson. Witnessed by Joseph A. Peach, N. Thompson, and Justice of the Peace Charles Soper on November 9 and recorded by Howard County clerk W. W. Watkins on November 22, the document identifies Susan Jackson as a dark copper-colored woman age about 32 years whose "freedom did commence" on November 1, 1854. (Editor's note: Why the discrepancy between the date of manumission, November 1, 1854, and the date the document was written and recorded, i.e., November of 1858, is not known. Blank pages 2 and 3 were not scanned and thus are not included.)
