Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.On verso, the delivery address is "Revd. Mr. A. A. Phelps, New York." It was postmarked with a circular red stamp that reads "Washington City ... [indeterminable] Aug 9."Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on blue, lined paper with an embossed oval logo in the head- spine corner. Adjacent to the salutation, towards the spine edge of the page, the number "92" has been drawn in pencil. On the seventh page, there is a red circular seal along the fore edge of the page. On the verso, along the spine edge, the phrase "Hopeful Toler, Washington, Aug 6/46. Ans. Aug. 13" has been written in ink, vertically, facing the fore edge of the page.Cataloged sgellermanHopeful Toler writes to Amos A. Phelps telling him that he has received his letter with "mingled emotions of gratitude and regard." He then restates his letter to Phelps from August 2, saying he wants "to get Ann placed in a good kind-hearted family where she would be well cared for and I be allowed to pay for it." Toler declines Phelps suggestion for "binding Ann for service" and assures Phelps he will "relieve you of your burden" and compensate him or anyone else who takes care of Ann. He then moves on to discuss the subject of a loan for Phelps, mentioning Phelp's failure to secure one in Ph[iladelphi]a.
